DeWayne graduated from Lynchburg College in Va. with Bachelor of Arts in Health and Physical Education.
He came to work with the Town in September of 1984, which only had baseball, slow pitch softball and football/cheerleading. DeWayne worked for the Town for over 27 years as Recreation Director, he retired in 2011.
During his tenure as Recreation Director, he added and implemented the following programs:
Youth soccer, Fall baseball and softball, Slow pitch to fast pitch girls’ softball
Added adult flag football; Adult men’s softball; Adult volleyball; Added youth basketball; The summer slam program. Implemented different events at the depot like shag lessons, crafts etc. Took on organizing the parade, tree lighting and street dance. He built fields 4 and 5 from ground up. Worked to get the gopher field from Santee Cooper. Helped lay out and build the BEC field and then maintained the field. Upgraded all lighting at Youth field and at the tennis courts and put down the current surface. Upgraded Lacey Park. Implemented sponsorships for teams and sponsor signage. Worked with the Jaycee’s to paint dugouts at Youth fields. Worked with the Lion’s Club build press boxes. Replaced all fences at Youth field and last but not least… designed the new Rec complex before retiring.
And a little fun fact about DeWayne, he was also a scout for the Atlanta Braves from 1989-2019.
He was first elected to Town Council in 2019 and reelected for a second term in 2021.
DeWayne and his wife Cheri have been married for 40 plus years, they have three grown children and 8 grandchildren.
